Bonsoir, serait-il possible d'avoir une correction pour ma notion sur "espaces et échanges" SVP ? Merci d'avance :)

Introduction :

I'm going to talk about the notion “Spaces and exchanges”.

This notion deals with the geographical and symbolic areas that all societies occupy and the interactions between men and different societies. Our world is built on the exploration and conquest of new spaces. The different cultural, economic, sociological and language interactions have shaped and characterized our modern-day world.

So, the space can evolve and take different forms. However, I decided to focus my work on the United States.

We may wonder : To what extent the United States are they a space of exchanges and immigration for years?

To answer this question I will present 3 documents: A painting called “Spirit of the frontier” by John Gast, an extract from The Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurty and a BBC report about the American dream.

My first part will be devoted to the conquest of the West and in my second part I will speak about the American Dream.

First of all, I will recall a little bit of history for a better understanding of the context.

In the mid to late 1800's, white Americans were settling in the Great Plains in the West. Indian tribes were also settled in the west which caused conflict between the two. This resulted in the two cultures eventually fighting, which is now known as the Indian Wars between 1860 and 1890. The Settlers were trying to make the Indians develop their beliefs and cultures. As for the Cowboys, they were actually settlers themselves, taking care of their cattle and ranch. The Cowboys and the Settlers got along because they shared the same beliefs. On the other hand, the Native Americans thought differently. When all of these people tried to live together in the same area the problems began to occur.

So, in class we studied an extract from Lonesome Dove, a western novel written in 1985 by Larry McMurtry. This extract deals with the relation between Cowboys an Indians in the years 1870's.

In this text, Newt a young cowboy aged 17, was guiding alone a cattle as he had lost the other cowboys when he suddenly met Indians. The Indians motioned to him to follow them. Newt was frightened. He imagined that the Indians wanted steal the cows and then, kill him as he had heard in some stories.

But in reality, the Indians just wanted to help him. And Newt sees how a small group of Indians is not there to kill him or steal his cattle, but rather wants to point him in the right direction.

To that extent, in this extract, there is a real nice exchange between the Indians and Newt whereas usually exchanges between Indians and Cowboys were violent.

It’s a lesson against stereotyping no matter what race or culture with which we may associate.

As we have seen with this document, in the 19th century, settlers migrated west into the plains and prairies once promised to the Indians. They also wanted to modernize the new west.

So, I will now move on to my second document which is a painting by John Gast entitled “Spirit of the frontier”. It was painted in 1872. This painting is an allegory of « Manifest Destiny »: a political doctrine claiming that it is the destiny of the white Europeans to conquered and civilized the west. It conveys the idea of American Progress and Westward expansion.

John Gast painted a popular scene of people moving West that captured the view of Americans at the time.

The painting demonstrate that the Native Americans and the buffalo are fleeing from the pioneers that had invaded their land.

In this scene, an Angelic woman called Columbia brings light to the civilization of the dark west.

This angelic woman did it with the American colonists, she installed the telegraph, symbol of progress. We can see a book on her right hand, the emblem of education, while with the left hand..she..unfolds..and..stretches..wires..of..the..telegraph.
The Indians flee from progress, unable to adjust to the shifting tides of history.
The painting represents the discovery of new spaces, there is a flow of people from the East to the West. It shows the conquest of a new world. The notion that the frontier would be developed by sequential waves of people is deeply rooted in American thought.

Since all the territory of USA was conquered, in the 20th century, immigrants' came to America in search of the American Dream – to them, the American Dream meant freedom.

So, I will now shift on to my second part to deal with the American Dream.

My third document is a BBC World America report from march 2011 which is about the American dream.

At the beginning of the report a woman announces the subject and then, an old woman is interviewed by a journalist.

The woman interviewed come from Russia and immigrated to USA when she was 10 years old. Her family went to Ellis Island in 1930 to flee the dictatorship of Stalin and in the hope of having more freedom. They dreamt of a new life. For them, the Dream was to work, to have a home, to get ahead for maybe start as a janitor and become the owner of the building. They didn't immigrated in a quest of money but in a quest of freedom and happiness.

So, this document evokes the immigration in the United States which is a kind of exchange because the flows of people arriving bring their culture and knowledge in a new country.

Conclusion :

In conclusion, I have just studied 3 documents demonstrating the fact that United States is a space of exchanges for years.

Indeed, in my first part we have seen that in the 19th century white Americans were settling in the West of the Usa where Native American were living. And this resulted into conflicts between the two cultures.

Then, in my second part, we have seen that in the the beginning of the 20th century people immigrated to the USA in the hope and dream of a new life with more freedom and happiness.

Moreover, I can add that since the World War 2, in the mid of the 20th century, people still believed in the American Dream, but they wanted more than freedom, they also wanted prosperity .

We can ask ourselves: Is the American Dream still alive today, in the 21th century ?

We may wonder : To what extent has the United States are they been a space of exchanges and immigration for years?
