Merci d'avance smile.png

I am going to talk about the notion « Myths and Heroes » . First of all, we have to define these two concepts. A myth referring to a traditional story concerning the history of a people, a natural or social phenomenon. A hero can be a mythological figure or a superhero but the definition has evolved and now refers to a person who is admired for his courage, achievements or noble qualities.

I-Myths and Heroes the origin of American Dream

For illustrate this part, I have chosen a cartoon entitled “Dreamland” by PISMESTROVIC in 2004. On this drawing, we can notice some monuments and monumental sculptures as well as famous fictional characters and celebrities. The cartoonist choose all these elements because, for him, they symbolise America. The places, things and people seen in the cartoon were the embodiment of the American way of life and present America like land of plenty (Coca-Cola, McDonald’s), a land of freedom (Lady Liberty), a land of achievement (The Empire State Building, Mount Rushmore), and a land of entertainment (Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, John Wayne, Mickey Mouse). The icons contribute to promote positive images of the country, which makes the cartoon attractive, conventional, truthful and idealized.

,II-Myths and Heroes as factor of social cohesion

For illustrate this part, I have chosen a picture entitled “Commemorative Tattoo”. In the background of this photography, there's the American flag (Stars and Stripes) and in the foreground there's a man, presumably a fireman because he's holding a helmet under his left arm. The picture must have been taken in the USA shortly after the terrorist attacks which took place on September 9th 2001. The fireman has got a tattoo all over his back which represents the burning and fuming twin towers. The names must be the names of his colleagues and friends who sacrificed their lives to save others. In the bottom left, we can notice the hand and the flame of the statue of liberty. The man must have made this tattoo out of patriotism and in memory of his colleagues, partners and friends and asking people, every american to react and fight against terrorism. He wants to keep the memory.

Through these two documents, the heroes give a positive image of the United States. Indeed, the first gives the image of a country of greatness and opportunities, which refers to the concept of the American Dream, as for the second, it gives the image of a welded nation despite the obstacles that may encounter.
