I'm going to talk about the notion “Spaces and exchanges”. To start with, I would like to give a definition of this notion. She shows that our modern-world seems to be smaller than few years ago because the geographical areas of the world are more and more connected to each other. Besides the exchanges are an illustration of the interactions between men and different societies. Among the whole of the propositions offered by the notion "spaces and exchanges", I have decided to illustrate that notion using the theme of immigration in the United States. We wondered how has the USA been shaped as a nation by the arrival of waves of immigrants? In the first place we will focus on the history and the different waves of immigration, then we will look at the reasons why people leave their country and finally we will talk about the impact of immigration on the american culture and the relationships between the American population and immigrants. At the beginning of the year, we worked on a photograph whose represents a protest march against racism in the USA. There are a lot of people who seems to be Hispanics or Latinos. One of them holds a banner with the inscription “we are all immigrants”. I think this man refers to the melting pot designation. In effect, lots of people call the American population a nation of immigrant because it's a group of people who come from diverse country and they build a homogeneous society. In other words the united states are multicultural, multireligious and multiethnic states. Nowadays twenty-seven procent of the population are black , hispanics or asian people. The american melting pot results of différents waves of immigration. In 1620, hundred people leave Plymouth in England to sailed to the US on the mayflower. They were called The Pilgrim Fathers. The Native Americans helped them to survive and a celebration was created “thanksgiving”. Since 1500, there are four important period for the immigration: the colonial period, the mid-19th century, the 20th century and the post-19th period. In the first period, most of immigrants come from europe and from West Africa. During the 19th century, the US welcomed people who comes from Ireland, Germany and China. Most of the new-comers of the 20th century sailed from Eastern-Europe but they must undergo a medical exam before they could enter America. After the 1960s, the immigration laws were revised and the immigrants come from all around the world. The document “a mozaic of people” can be linked to the notion because the immigrants have some differents reasons to leave their homecountry. We have discovered them in this documen. Indeed it speak about the different and waves of immigration and explain why the immigrants leave their country. However most of them are asylum seeker. They flee religious oppression, hardshipes, stravation, persecutions and war. They also want to escape moonlighting and unrewarding job. They year for better living conditions, peace, upward mobility. They dream to make a fortune or just earn a living to provide for one's family. There are also people who were forced to come as slaves to work on plantations or to build canals and railsroads in the USA. For the immigrants the united states look like the promise land. They are attracted by jobs, equalities. In addtion the scholling seems to be more important. The immigrants think they could find a livelihood and go from rags to riches. So they hoped about the American dream. The text “I am an undocumented immigrant” is a newspaper article. The author draws our attention to the fact that the livings condition of the immigrant are not really good nowadays. If they haven't got their Green Card, they can't get their drive permit. The language and the integration are also difficulties. Most of these people are afraid to put in jail if they are discovered and they don't want to be deported. The immigration laws and the construction of the wall between the US and Mexico symbolised that immigrants are not welcomed in the USA. All the same they are many immigrants who cross the border or sail the see to come to the US and live the American dream. Their foreign language, their culture, their food, their country and many other things changing the american way of life and the country. To conclude I found the topic interesting because I'm not against immigration. I think it's really good for a population to discover an other culture and I found that's important to welcomes foreigner who need help. I'm strongly disagree with the governement because it considers the question of immigration solely on the basis of figures. That's it!
