Doc 1:

The Great Gatsby F. Scott Fitzgerald 1925 The Party

Doc 2:

The Great Gatsby F. Scott Fitzgerald 1925 Gatsby's Doubts

Doc 3:

Film photo

INTRO:

What I would like to do is to explain the 3 documents in my file. The subject is emblematic figures in literature. I've chosen this notion because I think it's an interesting & universal theme. Indeed the emblematic figure is, by definition, a symbolic image strong enough to join the opinion of many. This year we studied "The Great Gatsby", emblematic figure & romantic hero of the American dream, written by Scott Fitzgerald in the 1920's during the Jazz age.

So the first document is a passage from the book, during a party which Gatsby gave. It points out the mystery surrounding the character of Gatsby for the people on Long Island. The second document is a famous passage where Gatsby shows his quest to get back Daisy & to repeat the past. Finally there's a photo from the new film version which shows the success story of Gatsby.

DOC 1:

So if we look at this first passage from the book we can see how the mysterious Gatsby has invented his life story. There are 7 people, guests at the party sitting at the table. One of the girls Lucille starts talking about the last party. She tore her dress & Gatsby replaced it with a new one from an expensive New York boutique. Lucille is obviously very impressed because it cost two hundred & sixty five dollars.

Even if Gatsby is not present here, this passage is in fact about him. We hear what other people think about him. One says "he killed a man" & then Lucille says he was "a German spy".

Gatsby inspires rumour & gossip. "The girls leaned together confidentially", "the men bent forward to listen" & the girls "shivered". They are excited by rumours about Gatsby. That's how you become a legend, when other people talk about you.

DOC 2:

Now let's have a look at the second document. In this passage, we understand that Gatsby really wanted Daisy to leave Tom & to start a new life with him. He wanted to go back in time as if the War & Daisy's marriage to Tom hadn't existed. Before she didn't want to marry Gatsby because he was poor. Now, he tries to impress her with a large house with a swimming pool & summer parties. That's why he gave parties.

DOC 3:

Finally, we can see in this photo from the new film version, the hero Jay Gatsby, who smiles & seems to be happy with his success. But the story of Fitzgerald tries to show that the American Dream is in fact unachievable. The idea that if you work hard enough, you can have everything you want. The truth is that, whenever you get that something you wanted, you still aren't happy. So you think you need the next thing & you go on & on always believing you're so close.

Gatsby is the epitome of the American dream. James Gatz starts from nothing, he works tirelessly & he gets everything he wants. He became the rich Jay Gatsby, famous & even has an affair with Daisy. Is he happy? No. He won't be satisfied til she says she never loved Tom. And if he gets, you can be sure there will be one more thing he needs.

CONCLUSION:

So how can Gatsby be a hero? He seems more like a loser in the book?

Well Fitszgerald's message is that you have to be part of the quest for the American dream of money & fame. Even if you lose out, you exist through the dreams you have. It's the quest that's important.
