THE caterers failed to turn up for James and Hannah Kirkby’s wedding reception – so they sent out for fish and chips instead.

The happy couple feared their big day would be a disaster when there was no sign of the slap-up meal for their 52 guests.

But within an hour everyone was tucking in after staff at a local shop delivered cod and chips piping hot in polystyrene boxes served up in paper.

Hannah’s mother, Katy Phillips, 44, said: “The fish and chips went down a treat. It was gorgeous. The shop even brought salt, vinegar and ketchup. It could have been a disaster but they really saved the day.”

James, 24, ironically a chef, and receptionist Hannah, 21, from Weymouth, Dorset, got that hungry feeling when they turned up for the reception at nearby Portesham village hall.

Mrs Phillips said: “It was clear the caterers weren’t coming. So I got in the car with my brother-in-law and we drove around desperately trying to get a signal on my mobile.”

But everywhere they tried was too busy to help – until the Marlboro fish and chip restaurant in Weymouth came to the rescue. Owner Mike Johnson said he and his staff worked flat out to provide 48 fish-and-chip meals and four vegetarian dishes for £200.

Mr Johnson said: “They phoned us at about 4pm and by 5pm they had their fish and chips. Luckily, because the weather was so bad it was fairly quiet. We have done some big orders in our time, but 52 people was a first.”

Mrs Phillips said: “We had these giant gold charger plates so we ate the fish and chips in their paper on those. Everybody really enjoyed the reception and got intothe spirt of things.“
