A New Kind of Warrior

When I got back to the reservation, my family wasn’t surprised to see me. They’d been expecting me back since the day I left for Seattle. There’s an old Indian poet who said that Indians can reside in the city, but they can never live there. That’s as close to truth as any of us get. Mostly I watched television. For weeks I flipped through channels, searched for answers in the game shows and soap operas. My mother would circle the want ads in red and hand the paper to me.

“What are you going to do with the rest of your life?” she asked,

“Don’t know, ”I said, and normally, for almost any other Indian in the country, that would have been a perfectly fine answer. But I was special, a former college student, a smart kid. I was one of those Indians who was supposed to make it, to rise above the rest of the reservation like *a fucking eagle or something, I was the new kind of warrior.

For a few months, I didn’t even look at the ads my mother circled. I just left the newspaper where she had set it down. After a while though, I got tired of television and started to play basketball again. I’d been a good player in high school, nearly great, and almost played at the college I *attended for a couple of years. But I’d been too *out of shape from drinking and sadness to ever be good again. Still, I liked the way the ball felt in my hands and the way my feet felt inside my shoes. At first I just *shot baskets by myself. It was selfish, and I also wanted to learn the game against anybody else. Since I’d been good before and embarrassed tribal members, I knew they would take revenge on me. Forget about the cowboys versus Indians business. The most intense competition on any reservation was Indians versus Indians.

1. What is the nature of the text? It is an extract from a novel called The Lone Ranger and Tonton Fistfight in Heaven, and writed by A Sherman.

The narrator is a young INDIAN who is returning to his RESERVATION .after having resided in Seattle. At first he falls into apathy and only watches TELEVISION without even reading the ADS of the newspaper to find a job. However, he begins to practice BASKETBALL again and gets ready to play with other Indians.

4. What was the narrator’s family reaction on his return? Where is an Indian’s real place, (quote to justify your answer)

The Narrator's family wasn't surprised. An Indian's real place is his reservation. “When I got back to the reservation, my family wasn’t surprised to see me.” l1. “There’s an old Indian poet who said that Indians can reside in the city, but they can never live there.”l2.

5. How do we see that at first he is depressed?

We see that at first the narrator was depressed because he always watched television. “For weeks I flipped through channels, searched for answers in the game shows and soap operas.” l3

c) A new kind of warrior

7. From the information in the text, say what characterised the narrator as a child and relate his life up to now.

First, we know that the narrator is a child because he says that he is a college student, and a kid: “But I was special, a former college student, a smart kid.” l7. It seems that the narrator, had go to Seattle searching a job or maybe a college where to study, and after, he is returned to the reservation.

8. Explain the choice of the image of the eagle and the shocking juxtaposition of “fucking” and “eagle”.

For the indians, the eagle is a symbol of greatness, and many of them are called “white eagle”, “great eagle”... So, we can say that the eagle is important in the indian's culture.

In this text, there is a juxtaposition between two words: “fucking” and “eagle”, we can say that in that way, the narrator express his feelings: he is angry because he have to “make it, to rise above the rest of the reservation”. The intention of the author, using this expression is to shock the reader, so that he could understant the narrator's feelings.

9. Explain the notion “a new kind of warrior”.

In history, during many years, there were fights between Indians and white mens. The Indians, were called warriors, that's why in the text, the author use the notion “a new kind of warrior”.

Using these words, the authors is trying to make us understand that before, Indians warriors only fight against white men, and know, the new indians, like the narrator, fight not just to defend themselfs from white men, but trying to had a better life than they ancestors, in Sherman's words “to make it”.

The new war is not against white men, but to get a better life, and a good education, and to “make it”.

Non là, tu es complètement à côté de la plaque. « A smart kid » ne signifie pas que c'est un enfant. Lorsqu'il revient de Seattle dans la réserve indienne, il rentre de l'université, c'est un jeune homme. On peut donc déduire qu'il a d'abord été au lycée, puis à l'université dont il est probablement diplômé. « A smart kid » = un jeune (homme) intelligent. Tu piges ? Retrouve donc les indices dans le texte pour rédiger ta réponse.

Je ne trouve pas, dans le texte, de renseignements sur la jeunesse du héros. Désolé ! :blush:

Quant à ta dernière question, je pense que tu es à même d'apporter une réponse circonstanciée. Je te résume la question :

Explique pourquoi le narrateur est attiré par le basket-ball et les répercussions de ses victoires passées. Pourquoi les compétitions sportives sont-elles si importantes pour les jeunes ? Cite l'exemple du texte et ceux que tu connais.

We can deduce from this, that the narrator had first go to the college, and after to high school, where he was probably a good student “But I was special, a former college student, a smart kid”

So, we can say that at that moment, the narrator was a child, and know, he is probably an adult, and he relate his life.

When the narrator was younger, he used to play basketball, he was “ a good player in high school”.

Moreover, we know from the text, that when he got tired of television, he started to play agin, that show us how the basketball is important for the narrator, it's for him, a way to got waay from his problems.

He first plays alone, but at last, he wanted to play against anybody else, because he wanted to improve his game, and because he know that playing against anybody, he would manage to love this game more than he does know, and also, that he would shows people that he can do something really important, that he is able to make it.

When I read this story, that remenber me black young people in America, they start playing basketball. WHY? Maybe because they want to forget they poverty, or maybe it is to struggle racial discrimination.

In this story for example, maybe the narrator plays basketball to show that, even being an Indian, he can play well, and maybe, be one day, one of the better in the world.

Let's remember that one of the best basketball players in the world is a black man: Mickael Jordan.

Everyday she circled the want ads in red and hand the paper to him. She knows that he didn't even take a look at them, but that makes her feel better, in that way, she thought she was helping him.

She always ask him what he was going to do with the rest of his life,and always get the same answer “don't know”.

How many times does she asked herself “why?”, “why does he came back?”, he got a good childhood, a good education.

And now...now he is there, like any other indian in the reservation, but she knows that it was not really his futur, he was a smart kid, he went to college, to high school, plays basketball...

No, her boy was not like any other indian, he's got a good futur, and she knows it!

She still remember when he started to play basketball at college. He was so good at this sport!

Why the white men are so racist?She knows why her boy has come back to the reservation, yes she knows it: because he is an Indian, and because he would not have a good futur because of the racial segragation, even being a smart kid!

Then he start plays basketball again, at first just shoting baskets by himself, but at last, he wanted to play against other indians. He was a very good player. And her mother was proud of him. (280 words)

=> Bien que je te l'aie corrigé, tu dois refaire cet exercice car tu n'as tenu aucun compte de la consigne. On te demande d'écrire "A New Kind of Warrior" du point de vue de la mère en utilisant la première personne, ce que tu n'as pas fait.

Par ailleurs, tu as intérêt à revoir tout ce qui concerne la concordance des temps au passé.

Tu n'as qu'à voir le nombre de rectifications que j'ai apportées, c'est frappant.

Révise aussi les verbes irréguliers, il faut les connaître parfaitement.
