why the caged bird sings:commentary

why the caged bird sings is an article written by alan zarembo and published in newsweek on september 10,2001.

the article deals with ana , a 35 year old mexican woman who lives in the us. she has divorced(line 5"a soon to be ex-husband) and has two children in mexico: a 7-year-old son , misa, and a 13-year-old daughter

,angel.

in 1995 she decides to emigrate to us illegally. she made that decision because in mexico she and her family were very poor.her working conditions were very bad. she only earned

$100 a month. so she lived under the poverty line(her income was insufficient to cover the bare essentials of life such as housing clothing and food) and was

unable to support her family decently. they all lived in a slum.

she chose to go to the us for different reasons. the most obvious one was that the us was just across the border(line 1:ana crawled into the united states through a moonlit drainpipe) still she

had to pay $1.500 to a smuggler. however she managed to cross the us and settled in new york where she had relatives who could put her up and get her a job

:"ana was simply following a family trail(line9).

but above all, she was attracted to the american dream. in the states she had the prospect of a better life: a better job with higher wages, the opportunity to climb up the social

ladder and more money for her family.

although she was unskilled she has succeeded professionally. she had different jobs and eventually became her own boss: she is now"a successful broker

for illegal cleaning women (line10). her success means that she has a much better income than in mexico. "last year ana made $50,000.

of course , as she is illegal she doesn't pay taxes. she has also succeeded socially. she has"american friends". ana deserves her success.she has

the required qualities. she is determined and hard-working. when she was in at he laundry, she worked"12 hours a day, six days a week".she

is strong-willed and efficient.

however we may wonder whether ana has really succeeded personally. her success

has a very high price. although she makes a lot of money, she is still illegal and undocumented. besides she is uprooted.

she can't go back. she doesn't even feel mexican any more. in a way,she has become americanized. "she has been sucked into the culture

of consumerism. and " mexico is strange country to now". it is true that with the money she earns, she can give her family in mexico

better living conditions. they now live in a two-story house and have everything they need, and even more.still she is cut off from her family.

she hasn't seen her children grow up and they no longer know her (line 13: to her children she is now just the things she sends home) she wanted to help her family and yet

ro some extent she has sacrificed her family life. we way wonder if it was worth it .

voici les questions ;

Bon courage !
